Orthodontic Implants

Orthodontic tooth movement typically requires a stable anchor to push or pull against, in order to move teeth around. With traditional orthodontic treatment, the teeth must be wired together using bands and brackets (braces), in order to provide this anchorage. Unfortunately, sometimes proper anchorage cannot be provided and the desired orthodontic tooth movement is not possible. Today, orthodontic implants can be used in order to provide proper anchorage.

Orthodontic implants are small titanium screws that are placed within the jaws and used by the orthodontist to push and pull against, in order to orthodontically move teeth. With this new technology, certain tooth movements that were impossible in the past are now a clinical reality. In addition, orthodontic implants can speed up overall orthodontic treatment. They are one of the most exciting contemporary developments in modern orthodontic treatment.

The above picture series demonstrates the use of orthodontic implants to intrude a lower molar. Three orthodontic implants were placed, two on the outside and one on the inside parts of the lower jaw. The orthodontist can use them to anchor a rubber band over the tooth to push the tooth back into the jaw.
